The Power of "Could": How to Break Free from Limiting Beliefs and Live Authentically



Do you ever feel like you're living your life according to someone else's script? Like you're constantly doing what you "should" do, rather than what you want to do? If so, you're not alone. We all have limiting beliefs that hold us back from living our most authentic lives. But here's the good news: it's never too late to rewrite your story.


The Crossroads of "Should" and "Must"

We often find ourselves at a crossroads where we have to choose between what we "should" do and what we "must" do. "Shoulds" are put on us from the time we are born and are often dictated by societal norms, expectations, or even shame. It's also usually the safe, comfortable path. "Must," on the other hand, is your soul's calling. It's what makes your heart sing, even if it scares you. "Must" is that intuition and the strong pull of your heart toward something that sets your soul on fire.


The "Should" Test

Here's a simple but powerful tip: Replace "should" with "could" or "I want to" and see if the idea still resonates with you. For example, change "I should go to that work event on Tuesday night," to "I could go to that work event on Tuesday night," or "I want to go to that work event on Tuesday night." If it doesn't feel right, it's not for you. It came from somewhere outside of you, and it's time to let it go in favor of honoring and prioritizing your own needs and desires.


The Role of Shame

Shame is a sneaky emotion that often fuels our limiting beliefs. As shame researcher Brené Brown tells us, it will send us one of two messages: "You're not good enough," or "Who do you think you are?" These messages can be paralyzing and keep us from taking action and gaining forward momentum in our lives. But the first step to overcoming them is recognizing them for what they are: lies.


The Power of Choice

You have a choice. You can choose to challenge these limiting beliefs and replace them with ones that serve you. It's not an easy process, but it's incredibly rewarding. And if you find yourself feeling uncomfortable, that's a good sign. Discomfort is a sign of growth. So, embrace it.
